Coach Information

Shaun Howe

I began my coaching career in 1993 with Club Columbine in Denver. I then went on to take leadership positions with West Des Moines Soccer Club (IA), SC Del Sol (AZ) and prior to coming to GJSC, I was the Director of Coaching for CRSA (IA). My proudest moments as a coach have been team accomplishments (more than 15 state championships in multiple states) and seeing dedicated players reach big goals (playing at the college level or representing regional or national teams). I have my USSF A License, NSCAA Advanced National License, Dutch Youth License, and will take my USSF National Youth this November. I have 3 kids named Hannah, Hayley and Sophie and a wife named Kathy.

Nick Gumpert

I grew up in Grand Junction. I also grew up playing for GJSC (formerly GMYSA) and at Grand Junction High School, where I graduated from in 2003.  I went on to play two years at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. While there, we were ranked as high as #3 in the country. I transferred to a small Division II school, Limestone College, in South Carolina. I played one season there before transferring back to Mesa State College. I traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil during the spring of 2007 to play with Bragantino FC before finishing my collegiate career playing in the inaugural season for the MSC Men's Soccer Team in the fall of 2007.

I served as the assistant coach for the GJHS Girls Team in the spring of 2006, assisted the boy's team in the fall of 2006, coached numerous teams within our club since 2007, assisted the MSC Women's Team in the fall of 2008, and have been in a Director of Coaching role for GJSC since 2008 and have now switched my role to being a Staff Coach. I have also helped coordinate trips for numerous players from our club to travel and play teams abroad - in Brazil and Europe (Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria) within the past couple of years and will be taking another group to Brazil this upcoming summer!

I earned a B.A. in Entrepreneurship from MSC in May 2008 and attained the NSCAA Advanced National License this last summer, June 2011. I will look to pursue the Premier License this next summer and then look to attain USSF licensing soon thereafter.

Larry Johnson

Coaching career began in 1982 as a goalkeeper coach in Portland, Oregon.  In 1983, I moved to Southern California where I started out coaching for AYSO.  While coaching in California, I attended several advanced coaching classes and seminars to continue to advance my learning.  Along with being a head coach for multiple teams, I have always enjoyed coaching goalkeepers.  In 1999, my family moved to Grand Junction, CO and I began coaching teams for Grand Junction Soccer Club (formally GMYSA).  In 2004, I coached both the boys and girls teams at Central High School sending the girls team to two State playoff berths for the first time in 12 years.  In 2008 and '09, I was the goalkeeper coach for the Mesa State Men’s Team.  I have two sons who played at the collegiate level and my wife Kathy and I have been married for over 30 years.

I Began playing soccer in Craig Colorado, about ten years ago my family moved to Grand Junction and I joined the Grand Junction Soccer Club (also known as GMYSA at the time). The club opened up a new level of play for me and helped provide the  opportunity of my team to travel to Brazil to learn more about the game and the culture there. While playing with the club I also played for Grand Junction High School. After High School I played for Mesa State College for four years. It was during this time I discovered the world of coaching. I would coach at soccer camps and was a skills trainer for a  soccer team in the club. After graduating I became a head coach for a team which brought the opportunity to become a Staff Coach for the soccer club where I am currently working with a wide range of soccer players (6-18). I have obtained my E license and I look forward to continuing my learning, coaching and love for the game
